Vertical Home Panel Siding: What It Is And Why You Might Love It

Wait-what? Home panel siding that is vertical? Yes, you read that correctly. Maybe it is time to change how you side your home and give it a very different look. Here is more on vertical home panel siding and why you just might love it.

Vertical Home Paneling, A.K.A., Standing Seam Panels

It is not that strange to panel your home with vertical panels, In fact, the pioneers always chose to panel their homes either vertically or horizontally. The intention was more than decorative; it was a matter of functionality. Now, you see a lot of homes with horizontal siding and not so many with vertical siding. That is simply because the production of man-made siding materials made it easier to install vinyl or plastic horizontally rather than vertically.

These modern vertical siding panels are stiffer and thicker than horizontal siding. That makes it much easier to install because the siding is not slipping this direction or that, nor is it flopping over the top of your head while you are trying to install it. The vertical panels also click together, edge to edge, thus holding the panels in place until they are fastened with nails or screws.

Why You May Love This "New" Type of Siding

As previously mentioned, pioneers choose the direction of their siding based on functionality. Horizontal boards kept the wind out, but vertical boards kept out the rain, snow, and sleet by allowing the precipitation to slide vertically downward in the direction of the boards. Likewise, so does this vertical siding. The added modern twist is that the panels are built to stretch out greater inches and feet and come pre-assembled that way. It blocks even more precipitation because there are fewer seams and every panel overlaps and clicks together.

Additionally, the look it gives your home is very unique. Anyone pulling up in front of your house can see that it looks nothing like the other houses on either side of you. It has a very vintage look to it, and on a much older home, it looks quite apropos.

You can choose a variety of colors, too, just like horizontal siding. Many of the panels contain a wood grain pattern or feel, in case you want the vertical panels to look a lot like wood. When they look more like wood, it often reminds people of Swiss chalets in the mountains, with their vertical wood paneling.
